Today marked an unforgettable chapter in Teeny Tykes Home Daycare's story as we embarked on a transformative outdoor adventure with Christina Pickles from the Go Outside and Play project, initiated by Calgary & Region Family Day Home Agency. Her visit marked an opportunity for us to share our experiences and insights into the invaluable world of outdoor play in early learning settings. Unfortunately, Anthony Bourque was not able to come today.
Building upon our commitment to nature-rich experiences, our day home welcomed the opportunity to share our passion for outdoor play and exploration. On recommendation by Jessica Popp, a Child Care Coach and Pedagogical Partner, our day home was chosen for this project which filled us with pride and excitement. It's a testament to our commitment to fostering holistic development through outdoor exploration. As an educator deeply passionate about the benefits of outdoor play, I was eager to engage with Christina and showcase our approach.

Ensuring the safety and comfort of the children during transitions and outdoor adventures is paramount in our day home. As we prepared to embark on our outdoor journey, the children eagerly climbed into the car, where they were securely buckled into their seats, ready for the day's adventures. Prioritizing their well-being, we ensured upon arrival at Fish Creek Park, that once they were unbuckled that each child was dressed in weather-appropriate attire, including snowsuits, snow boots, toques, neck warmers, and waterproof gloves, shielding them from the chilly elements before exiting the vehicle.
None of the enriching outdoor experiences we provide would be possible without the invaluable partnership and collaboration with the parents of the day home children. Their active participation and dedication to ensuring their children are equipped with weather-appropriate clothing on a daily basis lay the foundation for successful outdoor adventures. By prioritizing the importance of outdoor play and investing in the necessary attire, parents play a crucial role in creating a supportive environment that fosters exploration and connection with nature. Their commitment to embracing the outdoors as a vital component of early childhood education enables a "yes environment" for outings to green spaces, in turn, empowering children to engage in meaningful outdoor experiences that nurture their curiosity, resilience, and holistic development. Together, as a community of educators and parents, we cultivate a culture where outdoor exploration is not just encouraged but celebrated, laying the groundwork for a lifelong love of nature in our children.
Understanding the educator's view of a child and their self-image is paramount in shaping the opportunities for outdoor experiences. A positive perception of children as capable, curious individuals drives the educator's commitment to providing enriching outdoor experiences. When educators view themselves as facilitators of learning and champions of nature exploration, they are more inclined to prioritize outdoor play and seek out opportunities for meaningful outdoor engagements, such as driving to provincial parks or exploring green spaces daily. Moreover, an educator's self-image influences their confidence in navigating logistical challenges and advocating for outdoor play within their program. By fostering a strong sense of self-efficacy and a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of outdoor experiences, educators can create a culture where nature-rich environments are not just an occasional treat but an integral part of children's daily lives.
As Christina Pickles joined us on our outdoor excursion, we ventured beyond the confines of our usual play space to show her our secondary and third play special play spaces, embracing the vast wonders of Fish Creek Provincial Park. Despite the windy weather, our spirits soared as we engaged in immersive outdoor play experiences with the children.
Sitting alongside the riverbank, we marveled at nature's wonders, observing ducks as they foraged for food with their heads submerged and their tails playfully bobbing above the water.

We discussed the fact that in the embrace of nature, behavioral issues often melt away as children find solace in the rhythm of the natural world. The open spaces and sensory stimuli of outdoor settings provide an outlet for pent-up energy and emotions, promoting self-regulation and emotional resilience. Moreover, the collaborative nature of outdoor play encourages cooperation, communication, and empathy among children, nurturing a sense of belonging and community spirit. As we witnessed today, the shared experiences of laughter, discovery, and connection in the great outdoors forge bonds that transcend individual differences, fostering a cohesive and supportive learning environment for all. Outdoor environments offer a boundless canvas for exploration, where children are free to unleash their imaginations and engage in unstructured play.
Christina Pickles' visit today was not just an observation but a journey into the heart of nature with our little ones. Despite the windy weather, our spirits were high as we ventured to Fish Creek Provincial Park.

One of the highlights was witnessing the children's creativity unfold as they utilized the whiteboard markers to draw on the vertical plastic sheet. The bush provided a unique background canvas and the children added characters onto the plastic incorporating the background thoughtfully in their drawings. It was a beautiful blend of art and nature, demonstrating the endless possibilities that outdoor environments offer for learning and expression.
Armed with a variety of stimulating materials, including ribbons on sticks with bells, baskets for treasures, and a creative clear plastic tablecloth with markers, our outdoor adventure began.

The children's interactions with nature were captivating. From the mesmerizing dance of ribbons in the gusty wind to the joyous exploration of snow with scoops and rakes, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. Christina and I seamlessly joined in, embracing the play alongside the children.

Our journey led us to a second location, The children's fascination with the natural world was palpable as they climbed a large tree trunk that had fallen years ago. With each climb, they honed their balance and gross motor skills, fearlessly navigating the rugged terrain. Amidst the serene beauty of our surroundings, we encountered reminders of nature's raw power. Nearby tree stumps, felled by industrious beavers, served as a poignant lesson in hazard awareness. We engaged the children in discussions about safety, highlighting the importance of avoiding sharp hazards and exercising caution when exploring unfamiliar terrain.
As the hour progressed, the brisk weather began to take its toll, and some of the children started to feel the chill. Recognizing their discomfort, we took proactive measures to ensure their warmth and comfort. Gathering around, the children enjoyed sipping on warm milk, a comforting treat that not only warmed their bodies but also provided a moment of respite and connection. It was a testament to our commitment to providing nurturing and responsive care, ensuring that every child's needs were met throughout the outdoor adventure, from start to finish.
With renewed energy and spirits, Our journeyed onto our a third location, where we unveiled a cherished tradition – documenting seasonal changes. Then children engaged in an additional 20 minutes of play soaking in the last moments of outdoor exploration. At this picturesque viewpoint, we shared with Christina our tradition of capturing seasonal snapshots of the children. It's not just about witnessing the landscape transform with the seasons; it's also about tracing the ebb and flow of childhood, as familiar faces come, go and others growing up/aging with the passage of time. In this third location, nestled atop a cliff overlooking the breathtaking vista below, we invited Christina to join us as we laid on our tummies, peering over the edge to behold the majestic river winding its way through the landscape. As we marveled at the natural beauty surrounding us, we engaged in a candid conversation about the delicate balance between awe-inspiring scenery and the importance of safety. The contrast of the sublime landscape and the potential hazard of the crumbling edge served as a poignant reminder of the need for vigilance and respect for nature's power. Amidst the tranquil beauty of our surroundings, we fostered an open dialogue with the children, emphasizing the importance of responsible exploration and mindfulness of potential risks. It was a moment of reflection and learning, underscoring the profound connection between nature, beauty, and safety in our outdoor adventures
